Knight, Raymond Douglas

Pte. Raymond Douglas Knight was one of the young patriots who in that first September of the war hurried to the call of Canada's Army, and on the 23rd day of the month he enlisted with the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry. During the next nine months he trained at Hamilton and Camp Borden, and sailed overseas in July, 1940. Two years passed and Pte. Knight's unit took part in the raid on Dieppe, France, and became famous in the annals of the Second Great War. That day many Canadians lost their lives and Pte. Knight was so seriously wounded he died on August 27, but the way was paved to other invasions that were to mean final and supreme victory. Born December 12, 1919, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Knight, 23 South Street, Raymond attended Major Ballachey School. He was a member of the Salvation Army and the St. James' Anglican Church. Before his enlistment, he was employed at Cowman's and Robbins and Myers Company of Canada, Ltd. During his leisure he spent as much time as possible outdoors and was particularly fond of hunting. Pte. Knight was married to the former Miss Jean Pamplin.
