Summerhayes, Samuel Joseph
Pte. Samuel Joseph Summerhayes, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Summerhayes, 145 Bruce St., had only been in Normandy a short time when he lost his life while driving a jeep, on August 14, 1944. With many other Canadians he was buried at Beny-sur-Mer,
France. Born in Brantford, September 1, 1921, Pte. Summerhayes went to King George School and the Collegiate Institute. He was a member of St. Jude's Church. He was employed for some time at E. A. Fowler's grocery store. In 1940, enlisting with the Highland Light Infantry, Galt, Pte. Summerhayes was trained in Stratford, Quebec City and Debert, went overseas in 1941, and continued his training in England.
