Newsome, Chester Douglas (Chet)

F/S Chester Douglas (Chet) Newsome, son of Mr. and Mrs. I. Newsome, 267 Brant Avenue, was reported missing and was believed to have lost his life while engaged in aerial operations in the Middle East on November 19, 1941. He had seen, even at that stage of the war, almost a year and a half of service, enlisting early in August, 1940. His training had been carried on in Toronto, Trenton, Jarvis and Malton, from where he graduated as an observer on April 12, 1941. After a further brief course in navigation at

Rivers, Man., he moved to England and from there to Malta, where he was last based. Born in Brantford, Chet, as his friends had nicknamed him, attended Victoria Public

School here and matriculated from the Collegiate Institute and Vocational School. During his school days he was interested in the Hi-Y Club and later his leisure-time interest was archery. He was one of the charter members of the Brantford Archery Club and worked diligently to make the organization successful. So keen an enthusiast was he, and so popular with his fellow members that the Club now has a memorial trophy in his honor and each year in annual competition vie for the honor of having the best marksman's name inscribed on the Newsome Cup. F/S Newsome was a member of Brant Avenue Church. Before his enlistment, he was employed at the S. S. Kresge Co. Limited.
