Schertzberg, Milfred Elmer
Pte. Milfred Elmer Schertzberg was severely wounded during the heavy fighting in Belgium on October 24, 1944. He was removed by ambulance and ship back to an English military hospital and there he received such effective treatment that every hope was held that he would fully recover. But just when this hope ran highest, he suffered a relapse and his shocked family received the news that his death had occurred on December 24, 1944, just two months after he had become a casualty in battle. With full military honors he was laid to rest in Brookwood Cemetery, England. As a boy, he followed the same path as his friends of the Terrace Hill district. He went to Grand View School and later to the Collegiate Institute. He was a member of the Sydenham Street United Church and he also became interested in the activities of the young people there, and sang in the church choir. His job was driving for the Terrace Hill Dairy. He is survived by his widow, two children, Carol Ann and Terry, and his mother, Mrs. E. G. Schertzberg. Pte. Schertzberg enlisted in June, 1942, becoming attached to the 2/10 Dragoons with which he trained at Debert, N.S. When sent overseas, he was transferred to the 48th Highlanders of Canada and later to the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry.
