Williams, Herbert John
Pte. Herbert John Williams, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Williams, 149 Campbell St., was one of the gallant Canadians who played such a magnificent part in the battle of Caen, Normandy, and who gave his life that victory might be won. Enlisting in the Canadian Army on June 19, 1940, with the Highland Light Infantry, Galt, he was not yet 18 years of age. He went overseas about a year later, after training in Galt, Stratford, Quebec and Debert. He went into the invasion of Normandy and lost his life on July 31, 1944. Born in Brantford on January 10, 1923, Herbert received his education at King George School and the Brantford Collegiate Institute and Vocational School. He was employed at the Brantford Oven and Rack Company, and was a member of Marlboro Street United Church.
