Dowling, Ian Macmillan

F/L Ian Macmillan Dowling lost his life while on an operational flight in Alaska on March 26, 1943, after having served with the Administrative Branch of the R.C.A.F., since November 30, 1940, and having proved so valuable and able an officer, that he was commended, on March 5, by the Chief of Air Staff for submitting a suggestion on equipment distribution which was ultimately adopted throughout the entire Air Force. Thus did F/L Dowling exhibit the same qualities of ability and efficiency in his R.C.A.F. service he had shown in other phases of his life. Born in Brantford, June 3, 1907, he received his education here and at the University of Toronto, from which he graduated with the degree of Bachelor of Commerce. In his school days he was a good athlete, and as he grew older, one of the best golfers at the Brantford Golf and Country Club. In his classroom he was a brilliant student, and when he took his place as Vice-President in his father's firm of John S. Dowling, Limited, he was successful in the business field. Closely associated with community life, he served enthusiastically and effectively in many organizations. He was a director, Treasurer and Secretary of the Rotary Club; a director and Treasurer of the Y.M.C.A., a director of the Board of Trade, a director of the Brantford Golf and Country Club, and President of the Brantford Insurance Agents' Association. He was also a member of the Brantford Club. When he left his office to join the ranks of the R.C.A.F., he was keenly missed. His Air Force training carried him to

St. Thomas where he was granted his commission as pilot officer, subsequently receiving his further promotions. In turn he was stationed at Jarvis, North Sydney, Vancouver and Victoria. Under R.C.A.F. escort he was brought home to Brantford and buried with full air force honors. His funeral service was held at Zion United Church, where he was a member. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery. Surviving F/O Dowling are his widow, the former Miss Lauretta Landymore, and one daughter, Joan.
