Grant, Elmer James

Pte. Elmer James Grant took up residence in Brantford in 1943, after he received a call to service in the Canadian Army. He was a resident of Hamilton at that time and had since the beginning of the war tried to enlist in each of the three branches of service in turn. Because of his physical condition he was rejected as unfit. Three days after his removal to Brantford, he was again found not up to physical qualifications. He found work at the Cockshutt Plow Company, Ltd. Later in the same year, 1943, he was again called by the Army and this time was accepted. After training at the local camp, he was moved to Camp Borden. He left that centre on June 14, 1944, and was transferred to England where as a reinforcement to the Calgary Highlanders, he was moved to the Continent and on July 25, 1944, less than six weeks after he left Canada, he was killed in the battle for Caen. He now lies buried in the Caen-Falaise area. He was married to the former Miss Isobel Mason, who with her son, James Thomas, resides at 189 Bruce St.
