MacDonald, Harry Alexander

A/Cpl. Harry Alexander MacDonald, younger son of Mrs. Amy MacDonald and the late Kenneth MacDonald, was hardly 18 years of age when, in April, 1940, he hitch-hiked to Windsor to join the Essex Scottish Regiment. He was sent to Camp Borden with his unit and in less than five months was on the way to England. On August 19, 1942, he went into the Battle of Dieppe, and at the end of that grim day when the roll was called, after the remnants of the Essex Scottish returned to England, Pte. MacDonald was among the missing. It was not until September 23, 1943, that he was officially presumed dead. Born in Brantford, May 31, 1922, Harry attended Ryerson School. He was a member of St. James' Church, and, as a lad, was interested in the Boy Scouts and the Y.M.C.A. Also surviving A/Cpl. MacDonald is his grandmother, Mrs. Marion MacDonald, 46 Church Street.
