Nangle, Thomas Joseph

Pte. Thomas Joseph Nangle, son of Mr. and Mrs. P. C. Nangle, 109 Park Avenue, wounded in action for the second time on January 29, 1945, succumbed on February 11. He had enlisted at the age of 19 with the 48th Highlanders of Canada in February, 1943, and, after training in Simcoe and Camp Borden, proceeded overseas in September of that year. He was then transferred to the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and was intensively trained in Norfolk and Sussex in England. With his unit he moved to France on July 22, 1944. The following months were spent driving through France, Belgium and to the Maas River in Holland, and he was wounded in action on September 9. The final battle he saw began on January 26, when three Allied regiments began assault on the Kapelsche Veer bridgehead. Pte. Nangle was particularly apt at rifle shooting, having won the right to wear the crossed guns badge on his tunic. Born in Musselburgh, Midlothian, Scotland, March 4, 1924, Pte. Nangle came to Brantford in 1937 and attended St. Mary's Parish School and Church. Afterwards he worked at Brazil's grocery store and then was on the staff of the Canadian Department Stores, Limited.
