Pilley, Harry

Pte. Harry Pilley had been long interested in the Army. When "C" Company, Dufferin and Haldimand Rifles (Reserve) was formed in Paris, he joined its ranks and showed such aptitude for its activities that he was soon a sergeant. He enlisted in April, 1940, in the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry and trained at Camp Borden for a few months before going overseas, arriving in England on August 1. Two years later on August 19, 1942, he lost his life at Dieppe when his regiment took part in that memorable and ill-starred battle. Born in Brantford, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Graham Pilley, Dumfries Lane, Paris, he received his education in that town and upon leaving High School was employed at Penmans Limited until he enlisted for army service. Active in the community as a boy, he was a member of the St. James' Troop of Boy Scouts and was on the Junior Hockey and Lacrosse teams.
