Barnes, Frederick Arthur

The day Canada officially declared war on Germany, Pte. Frederick Arthur Barnes, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Barnes, 178 Sheridan St., enlisted with the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry. After training at Hamilton and Camp Borden, he sailed overseas with his regiment in July, 1940, and for the following two years trained in England. Then on August 19, 1942, with other valiant Canadians, he took part in the attack on Dieppe and lost his life. He was buried at Hautot-sur-Mer. Born in Echo Place on June 29, 1914, Frederick was educated at Alexandra School. He attended St. Jude's Anglican Church and Sunday school. He joined the 3rd Company, 3rd Canadian Machine Gun Battalion (Reserve), while still in his teens. His first job was with the Watson Manufacturing Company, and at the time of his enlistment, he was driving for the Colter Cartage. Besides his parents, he is survived by his widow and four children, Frederick, Gordon, Marilyn and Leone.
