MacNicoll, Robert Campbell

F/S Robert Campbell MacNicoll, the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert O. MacNicoll, 152 Terrace Hill St., had decided upon his life's work when war interrupted his plans. He was then at 19, a student at the Ontario Agricultural College, Guelph, and was also associated with his father in the dairy business. Enlisting with the R.C.A.F. in March, 1943, he trained at Toronto, Claresholm, Alta., Trenton, Ont., Valleyfield, Que., and graduated in 1944 as an air gunner from the Macdonald, Man., Bombing and Gunnery School. He had been overseas 11 months when he was reported missing after air operations on February 22, 1945. According to captured German documents, forwarded through military headquarters in France, it was learned that he had lost his life over Germany and was buried on his 21st birthday in the Bocholt Cemetery, Germany. Born in Brantford, Robert attended Alexandra Public School and the Collegiate Institute and while at the latter school, not only distinguished himself as a good student, but also as an outstanding rugby player. He was a member of the Y.M.C.A., taking full advantage of the facilities of the swimming pool and gymnasium. He had also displayed, as a younger lad, a keen interest in the Boy Scouts. His church was St. Jude's Anglican. His failure to return home from service overseas, was a great shock to his parents and the community.
