Sleeth, Stewart

WW.O. 1 Stewart Sleeth was born in Brantford on May 3, 1914, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Sleeth. During the First Great War his father made the supreme sacrifice and Mrs. Sleeth was left to bring up her small son. She sent him to Major Ballachey School and to the Collegiate Institute and Vocational School. He attended St. Jude's Church and sang in the choir. When Stewart graduated from school in 1932, he and his mother moved to Detroit, Mich. However, his affections were strongly centred in this city and his vacations were all spent here with relatives. When war came, he returned to Canada, enlisting in the Royal Canadian Air Force at Hamilton, in January, 1940. He was stationed at bombing and gunnery schools throughout the West, finally attending the astro-navigation school at Rivers, Man. Then he was sent overseas, arriving there on March 14, 1942. As a crewmember of an R.C.A.F. Halifax bomber he took part in many flights over enemy occupied territory and was Mentioned in Dispatches as taking part in one sensationally smashing raid on Berlin. For more than a year he continued to fly, and then his family received the news that he had been reported missing on April 27, 1943. Official confirmation of his death was received in July. After the occupation of Germany, records found indicated that he had been buried at Dusseldorf, Germany.
