Plant, Walter Henry

W.O. 1 Walter Henry Plant, only son of Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Plant, 59 Aberdeen Avenue, was on a reconnaissance flight when he lost his life near Bilbeis, Egypt, on October 22, 1942, and the R.C.A.F. he served lost a splendid young observer. Applying for service in the Air Force in February of 1940, Walter was not called until July of that year and he then was trained in Toronto, Camp Borden, Regina, Brandon and Seal Cove, B.C., graduating as an observer at the Fingal School on March 24, 1941. He took additional training at Rivers, Man., and was then posted to the Ferry Command, his first large-sized responsibility being the ferrying of a bomber to England in July. He was with the Coastal Command in Scotland, Northern Ireland, South Africa and finally in the Middle East. He was buried at Heliopolis, Egypt. Born in Brantford on August 2, 1920, Walter attended Bellview School and the Collegiate Institute. He was a well-known young athlete, active in rugby, baseball and softball. He played for the Brantford Alerts Baseball Club for some time. He attended Trinity Anglican Church. Prior to his enlistment, W.O. 1 Plant was employed at Verity Works, Massey Harris Company, Ltd.
