Hansford, George Wellington

One of Brantford's best known young men, W.O. 1 George Wellington Hansford, younger son of Mr. and Mrs. William E. Hansford, 65 Colborne Street, West, was lost to the community when he was reported missing over Burma on June 24, 1944. He was doing a hazardous job in the service of the R.A.F. Transport Command ferrying goods from India to China, and his parents later learned that he had been buried in a permanent military cemetery at Kohina, India. Born June 13, 1918, he was educated at Ryerson School and the Collegiate Institute. He attended Balfour United Church. After his school days, he was employed at Scarfe and Co. Limited. Unusually tall and well built, it was natural for W.O. Hansford to excel in sports, and his special interest was softball, playing for the Paterson's factory team and later, when in the Air Force, continuing to play whenever he had an opportunity. After training as a wireless air gunner at Guelph, Dunnville and Greenwood, N.S., he graduated from his course in July, 1942. Posted to England in the following January, he also served in Northern Ireland before going to India. When news of his death was received in the City, a large number of friends joined his family in mourning him. The R.C.A.F. had lost a splendid airman and the community a promising citizen.
