Tatai, Stephen

F/S Stephen Tatai, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. John Tatai, R.R. 4, Brantford, was reported missing following air operations on February 21, 1944, and it was learned that he had been buried at Plittersdorf, three miles southeast of Bonn, Germany. Born in Brantford, December 16, 1916, Stephen received his education at the Mount Vernon Public School and the Burford High School. He had a true countryman's love of the outdoors and his favorite leisure time activities were hunting and fishing. He had, while at school, evidenced an interest in machinery and when he put his school books aside, it was to earn his living at the Cockshutt Plow Company, Ltd., and finally, at the Bertram Tool Company, Dundas. He was a member of the Mount Vernon United Church. Enlisting in the R.C.A.F. in August, 1942, the young airman trained at Lachine and received his wings at Mont Joli, Que., in April, 1943, and after a furlough at home was posted overseas. In England he was attached to the R.A.F., and before going to Bomber Command was doing reconnaissance flying. That he did his job well and efficiently and that he was happy serving his country was emphasized by his officers in letters to his family.
