Richter, Gordon William McKay

Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Richter, 4 Grand View St., had a double burden of sorrow to bear as a result of casualties in the Second Great War. They lost their eldest son, F/O Gordon William McKay Richter, and their youngest son, Cpl. Ernest (Red) Richter. Both heard the call to service early in the war years. F/O Richter enlisted in the R.C.A.F. in April, 1940, and began active training as a pilot in July. The following year at Camp Borden he graduated and received his wings. Posted as an instructor at Aylmer, Ont., he did his job faithfully and well and then was posted overseas in May, 1943. He was then attached to the bomber command and lost his life on a raid over Leipzig, Germany, February 20, 1944. Born in Brantford, September 28, 1914, Gordon had attended Grand View School and later became a student of the Vocational Department of the Collegiate Institute. After graduation he was employed at the Cockshutt Plow Company, Ltd. He attended St. James' Anglican Church and Sunday School. His athletic ability contributed substantially to the success of the Junior Alert Baseball Club, as he was one of its enthusiastic and skilful pitchers. In 1940 he was married to Miss Margaret Gardner.
