McIlreavey, Joseph Baird

L/Sgt. Joseph Baird McIlreavey, second son of Mrs. Robert McIlreavey, 15 Gordon Street, lost his life in a premature bomb explosion while in action in Belgium, on October 11, 1944, and was buried at Maldegem. Later his body was removed to the Canadian Military Cemetery at Adegem, Belgium. His comrades mourned the loss of a good friend and his officers paid high tribute to his many fine qualities as a soldier. Born at Castlerock, Ireland, on December 23, 1922, he came as a small boy to Brantford in April, 1926, and was educated at the Bellview and King Edward Schools. He was a member of the Wesley United Church. After his schooldays he was employed at Harding Carpets, Limited. He was 18 years of age when, in that first summer of war, on June 7, 1940, he enlisted with the l1/69th Field Battery when it mobilized here. He trained at Hamilton, Petawawa and Sussex, N.B. He was transferred to the 11th Battery, 12th Field Regiment, and proceeded overseas, arriving in England in July, 1941.
