Burrows, Ernest Edward

While serving on the corvette, H.M.C.S. Regina, and on a mission of mercy, Sto. 1/C Ernest Edward Burrows lost his life at sea. It was on August 8, 1944, and the Regina was acting as an escort for a convoy ferrying munitions and supplies from England to Normandy. While some distance off the coast of England, one of the convoy, an American merchant ship, struck a mine and began to sink. The Regina went to her rescue and she, herself, was damaged with fatal results. Of the 26 missing officers and ratings, Sto. Burrows and another Brantfordite, Sto. Alec (Bud) Lovell, were two. The Regina was the 17th Canadian warship and the seventh corvette lost at sea. Born in Brantford on November 22, 1920, he went to Ryerson School and the Collegiate Institute and Vocational School. He attended Park Baptist Church and the Y.M.C.A. He was employed at the Steel Company of Canada Limited. He tried several times, before he was finally accepted in late 1943 for service in the Navy. On August 8, 1942, he married Miss Evelyn V. Soderstrom. His father is Mr. James E. Burrows, 93 Lyons Ave.
