Smith, George Edward

Gnr. George Edward Smith was reported killed in action in France on August 10, 1944, but so intense was the fighting and so heavy the casualties, that no details have been received by his parents, C.S.M. Walter E. Smith and Mrs. Smith, 128 Mintern Ave. It was only on November 21, 1945, that official notification was received of the location of his grave at Quesnay, in the Department of Calvados, Normandy, France. He had been overseas more than two years and was serving with 5th Anti-Tank Unit attached to the 14th Battery, R.C.A. Twenty-two years of age, Gnr. Smith was the fourth member of his family to serve in His Majesty's forces. His father served throughout the entire war as a school instructor at Camp Borden. His brother, Sto. 1/C Frederick was in the R.C.N.V.R. and his sister, Lillian, a L/Cpl. in the Canadian Women's Army Corps. Born in

Church and later attended Wesley Church. When he left school, he worked in the Shell Department at the Cockshutt Plow Company, Ltd. Enlisting in February, 1942, he trained at Toronto, and Petawawa, in Ontario and at Huntingdon, Que.
